Meet the girls

The following is a true story about a guy who was involved with one of the many young Thai girls, I know its true because we became friends after our first meeting. It is just one of many first hand encounters I have come across.

I'm not going to mention names or locations except for Pattaya, but this guy took early retirement from a large company which provided him with a lump sum together with a small pension. He also sold his posessions and his home in the UK. So he came to Thailand in a great position. I for one would have at the time given my high teeth to be in his situation, he was set for a good retirement.

I once had a Thai girlfriend who lived in a good sized town in central Thailand and every few weeks we would visit to get away from all the attractions in Pattaya and take in a little "normality" and forget about Pattaya nightlife and the bars. My girlfriend was off shopping so I decided to have a coffee at a popular farang meeting place. I should point out here that it was popular due to the fact it was at a busy crossroads, where one could be entertained by superb exhibitions of bad driving and various degrees of motorbike accidents. And many of the guys enjoyed a little flirting with the many passing young Thai girls.

When I arrived every table was empty so I sat down, ordered my coffee and began my session of street watching. Shortly after a man strolled up looking like he had, had a good party the night before. He sat at the next table and ordered a beer, I recognised the accent as being close to where I lived in the UK. So I decided to introduce myself and sure enough he lived less than 10 miles from my house.

He joined me at my table and we had a good conversation sharing our experiences of Pattaya, comparing the go go bars and which was the most entertaining and the locations we enjoyed. He went on to explain that he liked Pattaya soi 6 as this offered him discretion for his free time "activities," as he was in a long term relationship with a relatively young Thai girl.

Fast forward a few months and we are often going for a days fishing and I'm a regular visitor at his home. Which to be fair was far too big for his requirements. There was only him and his young Thai girlfriend, did he really need 5 bedrooms, three bathrooms in a large detached residence. Not to mention spending a small fortune on furniture. I once explained its of no concern to me but why such a big house? His reply was, well the girlfriend likes the place!! I knew he was living beyond his means, and so did his other friends. We all tried to tell him if you're gonna live here you have to get out of the "on holiday" frame of mind.

He also explained to me his young Thai girlfriend was putting him under pressure to buy some land and upon which build a house. I explained its not unusual for Pattaya girls to meet up with a farang and do exactly that. I also said that if she continues to ask, that its clear she's more interested in you building a house than perhaps she is in you.

After a time it became clear to his friends and myself that his Thai girlfriend was the classic gold digger, alas he could not see this. And his drinking habit was becoming worse, much worse. This was probably his way of dealing with the situation. He had told us she keeps nagging about building a house and to pacify her he would spend money on other things, such as gold rings and other jewelry.

His drinking was now a major problem and so was his relationship with his young Thai girl. We hadn't seen him for a few days and we were becoming concerned. He turned up at the coffee shop one morning to explain what had happened. Apparently while he was sleeping off a major boozing session his Thai girl had gone into the safe, and taken the cash that was in there along with all the gold. Unfortunately he had trusted her with the combination. It had also come to light that over the previous week she had been drawing cash from the ATM using his card! He had even trusted her with the pin Number. She had also taken the relatively new pick up truck, however as she couldn't drive he found it a short distance up the street wedged against a tree with the resulting damage.

Incredibly she had contacted him saying she "now work bar Pattaya", no doubt with a bunch of other young Thai girls. Over the next few weeks with the help of a Thai speaking friend he was back and forth to the police, who to be honest were not really that interested. Explaining that issuing an arrest warrant was a serious matter etc, etc; Her brothers who lived locally knew of his visits to the police and made serious threats to shall we say his well being!

We explained that he'd had a lucky escape and that she hadn't totally cleaned him out. And that he should move on and sort himself out. Now most of us would lick our wounds try to forget and get on with it. Well such is the addiction of young Thai girls... What does he do? Not only moves back to Pattaya but gets the girl out of the bar and moves her back in with him! go figure.

Unfortunately he had paid 12 months rent in advance for the large house, in order to obtain a reduction in the rent. Not a bad idea really, as long as you are absolutely sure of staying there for 12 months. Meanwhile in his absence we were to discover that the house had been virtually emptied of the expensive furnishings, no doubt to be sold or shared amongst the family.

When this guy moved back to Pattaya information did become a little vague. We tried to keep in touch but he changed his phone number or more likely his Thai girlfriend changed it for him.

One of his friends did manage to track him down, he was living in a small house on the outskirts of Pattaya. His house was barely furnished and he had sold his pick up truck, believe it or not to pay off his girlfriends debts! When asked where his girlfriend was, he replied that she was working as a hostess in a bar. This friend returned saying he was now a lost cause.

We do not know and will never know the full details of exactly how this young Thai girl was able to extract all his savings. He did contact a few friends by telephone asking for help, particularly of the financial type. And he did speak with me. His situation was not good, he was living off his small pension which barely covered his rent and living expenses. We all suggested that he should head back to the UK where at least he had some family and could at least work.

A couple of guys did help him out financially for a short while. But when that help stopped we never heard from him again. And we don't know what became of him after. Did he go back to the UK? has he been locked up? he could even be living on the streets somewhere in Thailand, which is something that does happen. And as for his young Thai girl, she could be anywhere... Looking for her next victim, er sorry potential farang husband!

I suppose the moral of the story is do not let your heart rule your head and keep a sense of self control, because this is Thailand and hey, you can do pretty much anything and nobody is gonna say "you can't do that".
