Thinking of starting a new career!OK, so you're thinking of starting a new career, or you just fancy a change from the daily grind. Moving as I did and living in Thailand and getting one of the many ESL teaching jobs is a bit drastic to say the least. Even though there are many EFL jobs in Thailand its a big step to take, and then there's the cost of the course etc, Well, here's how one colleague of mine did it. He works online etutoring and he is at the moment living in Vietnam, He's one of these guy's that likes to travel and working online allows him to do that.
You may want to be starting a new career for many reasons and I know that there are literally millions of people out there who would like to work from home, however the internet is full of various and dubious opportunities, enough said! So what do you do? Well you probably don't realise just how much your skill of speaking English is in demand and I mean high demand. Point in case.. I'm an English teacher in a small rural Town in Thailand. My school is now on the end of term break (at the time of writing this) so I'm on holiday. In the first week I was asked by four separate local people to give English conversation lessons. That's in a very small town, imagine a huge city like Bangkok. I don't have to imagine because I've been there and let me tell you the demand is enormous. The story is the same for Pattaya, every bar girl I meet want's to learn more English. Better English = more money!! Now imagine being able to offer your etutoring globally!
What my colleague did was to set up his own online English school, Now to be honest here I ain't done that but he assures me its very simple to do and it took him less than a day. Obviously starting a new career like this your gonna need a few things. No,1 you will need a computer or a laptop. No,2 a decent internet connection. No,3 a web cam and microphone. And I ain't gonna say its easy, cos yep you're gonna have to work. But the rewards are definately there. You maybe asking OK why am I not doing it? And its a fair enough question and the answer is I prefer to be with a live class where I can personally interact with my students. I did try online teaching for a short while and it was OK but we are all different, and it did not suit my personality. It does suit a lot of other teachers though.
