Probably the best Muay thai training available, is in Thailand

MUAY THAI TRAINING

is available in Pattaya and throughout Thailand, however the more popular camps are all situated in popular and well known tourist locations. Probably the best one in Pattaya is Fairtex on North road.

Muay Thai is Thailands national sport

Western Muay Thai boxers are often called "nak muay farang" which basically means foreign boxer, a Thai boxer is called a nak muay.

Thai`s refer to it as the science of eight limbs or the art of eight limbs! as it utilises punches, knee`s, elbows and kicks which together make up eight points of contact, as opposed to the two fists in western boxing.

HISTORY

Many types of kick boxing have been taught and carried out all over Southeast Asia, all using a mixture of Indian and Chinese martial arts. In Thailand muay thai evolved from ancient boxing (muay boran), which was probably used by siamese soldiers and was an un-armed combat these soldiers would of used after losing their weapons.

TECHNIQUES

Proper Muay Thai is divided into two groups, Luk Mai (minor techniques) and Mae Mai (major techniques). Muay Thai is often a battle of attrition where each opponent will exchange blows with each other, and is the case with traditional boxers in Thailand.

However this form of fighting is much less popular in todays world boxing and fighting circuit.

MODERNISATION

It was 1868 when King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) ascended to the throne. The King had a personal interest in the sport and Muay Thai progressed rapidly due to that interest. Muay Thai training was (and still is) excellent physical excercise a good form of recreation, self defence and personal development.

Muay was taught in camps, students were given food and shelter and would be treated as one of the family. It was customary for a student to adopt the camps name as his own surname. The royal family would send scouts to these muay thai training camps and arrange bouts between them.

Rules were put into place after King Rama the VII pressured for rules in the sport, and it was in 1921 that Thailands first boxing ring was built at Suan Kularp. Also referees were brought in and rounds were timed by kick.

At the Lumpanee stadium boxers began to wear modern gloves, both in bouts with foreigners and in training. In bouts between Thais rope binding was being used, up until a death in the ring, it was then decided that fighters should wear gloves as well as protection for the feet and ankles.

Muay thai has become a great success within the mixed martial arts scene and is almost the default style of competitive fighting. Western fighters have incorporated much of muay thai training.
