Getting around pattaya by baht bus is best.
By far the best way of getting around pattaya is by baht bus. There are hundreds of them driving around pattaya, you can stop one simply by raising your hand, often they will sound there horn if you are not looking. If this happens and you dont want one just shake your head. Its a case of jumping on and sitting on one of the benches that run down each side. When you want to get off you need to press the buzzer, the buttons for which you will notice running along the inside of the roof, press this and the driver will shortly stop. Make sure the bus has stopped completely before you even stand up.
Do not get on an empty baht bus that is parked up, He may take you where you are going but it shall cost you more. If for some reason you do want to go somewhere using an empty bus always negotiate the fare before your journey The usual fare for getting around pattaya is 10Bt, however if you travel a little further to say Jomtien then its 20Bt. Once you get off the bus go to the passenger side and pay the driver or whoever is in the passenger seat do remember to wait until the bus has stopped before getting off Metered Taxi Personally I have never taken a taxi for getting around pattaya simply because baht buses are so good, I am reliably informed however that only a few metered taxis actually use the meter! I would suggest if the driver dont use the meter,,dont use the taxi.
Motorbike Taxi There are lots of motorbike taxis driving around pattaya, there on street corners, under trees,on the pavements shop doorways,,everywhere, and they ride everywhere. They are easy to recognise as they all wear vests of one color or another usually with a number on the back
I would say the "average" fare is 40Bt if you and a friend jump on one together it will cost more. And do remember to wear what is laughingly called a crash helmet the taxi rider gives you..Its better than nothing I suppose. If you are with a female friend dont be surprised if she sits sidesaddle. Renting a motorbike My honest advice is dont! unless you really want to or are very confident and have plenty of experience. Riding or driving around pattaya is not easy, the roads are chaos, and forget about normal rules. Hope that made you think twice, after having said that a small motorbike is a great way to get about and I reckon the twist and go types are the best. These guys do great deals on bike rentals in pattaya I regularly rent from them. Take it easy bike rental Do remember to wear the helmet that is provided as the police will stop you and you will be fined and for whatever reason could result in a visit to the police station, not a pleasant experience. It is possible to rent larger machines, but unless you really know what your doing, again dont! You can rent a twist and go for 200Bt per day, or for longer periods 3000Bt a month. Car hire in Pattaya There a numerous car rental companies around pattaya and prices start at about 700Bt for the day. You can also rent one for longer periods which works out less expensive. Do bear in mind that driving around pattaya can be a time consuming experience not to mention frustrating. Other ways of getting around pattaya include riding a bicycle which is surprisingly good I have seen some of the larger hotels renting them. However you can buy one for a very reasonable cost, checkout Carrefour on central road pictured below
Walking is an excellent way of both getting around and finding out what is where, However as I said before on the home page it is not neccesarily the safest option. Potholes are everywhere not to mention all sorts of other obstacles including electric cables hanging down from buildings, telegraph poles, phone booths etc, so be prepared.
If you are walking around pattaya you will see pedestrian crossings, but do not expect traffic to stop for you.. It wont!
